Northwest Jacksonville Bus Shelter Upgrades Improve Safety, Accessibility, and Community Identity

Corona, CA — Tolar Manufacturing, North America’s leader in the design and fabrication of award-winning transit shelters, has partnered with Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) to fabricate, deliver, and install 115 new Sunset bus shelters equipped with amenities such as benches, trash receptacles, and bike racks. The shelters feature dynamic signage with real-time route information, safety improvements, and public space improvements, increasing comfort and safety at the stop. Custom public art panels designed by community members will add local character and help to create a sense of place. The shelters are part of the nearly $14,000,000 Northwest Jacksonville Corridor Improvements Project, which will create an estimated 85 direct jobs and over 50 indirect jobs, promoting economic growth.
The Northwest Jacksonville Corridor Improvements Project enhances the transit user experience in Northwest Jacksonville by improving amenities and focusing on safety and accessibility, providing connections to prominent destinations, and embracing the identities of local communities. Fourteen of the shelters will feature custom art printed on perforated metal panels. The designs were developed by community members as part of JTA’s Northwest Corridor Public Art Initiative, reflecting the cultural identity of Jacksonville’s neighborhoods while creating visually inviting public spaces.

The Sunset bus shelters feature fully welded 10-ft and 15-ft radius roof designs with 5ft wide driplines along a fully welded roof structure. The shelters also include 80W roof-mounted solar panels with integrated battery storage that power the RMS80F Solar Lighting System, providing under-roof security lighting with five-day minimum autonomous operation through an 8W LED light fixture. After initial installation, the shelters will be outfitted with 13-inch or 32-inch E-Paper displays, providing real-time passenger information. Each Sunset shelter is equipped with a 5-foot or 8-foot strap bench with seat delineators, 32-gallon strap trash receptacle, and bike rack for rider comfort and convenience. Amenities are finished in a durable baked powder coat selected from Tolar’s RAL color chart. Tolar Manufacturing has also provided 60 PV Stop MAX solar pole units with JTA agency branding. Each of the PV Stop Max installations features solar-powered security lighting, providing important stop illumination for evening travelers. “The Northwest Jacksonville Corridor Improvements Project highlights the commitment of JTA and Tolar to delivering solutions that not only improve the rider experience but also strengthen community identity and local economic impact by creating a sense of place,” said Scott Williams, Business Development Manager, Tolar Manufacturing Company.
