Project of Distinction – Carson, CA

LOCATION

The city of Carson is located in the South Bay region of Los Angeles, California just 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. As a high population-dense suburb of L.A. with over 90,000 residents, quality public transportation and supportive amenities such as bus shelters are crucial.

As of 2021, Long Beach Transit has been providing fixed-route bus services for the city of Carson.

PROJECT SCOPE

Tolar Manufacturing Company, a provider of transit shelters and related amenities to the City of Carson since 2016, was recently selected to provide amenities to improve nearly 200 bus stops within the city, including 18 transit shelters, to accommodate the needs of its vibrant community.

Working with City staff, the Tolar team created custom branding on the rear walls of the 11-ft cantilever shelters, some of which contain a revenue-generating media display kiosk.

Each shelter is available with either dusk-to-dawn solar power illumination or with grid-tied LED illumination with the roof batteries and controller in a tamper resistant enclosure within roof beam.

For the City’s major hub at SouthBay Pavilion, the Tolar team designed and fabricated high visibility, fully branded 28-ft Signature Sunset Custom Empire (shown above) transit station shelters. Each station shelter features back-to-back media display kiosks, custom Carson-branded perforated rear walls, and large three-dimensional SouthBay Pavilion lettering above the shelter roof line. Two Tolar USC RMS 170 UL-listed solar-powered illumination systems power both the media display kiosk for up to six hours after dusk and two hours before dawn, as well as the under roof dusk-to-dawn LED illumination.

All shelters include Mesa benches with seat delineators.
